A diesel particulate filter (or DPF) is a device designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine.
Since 2009, the exhaust emissions standards for new diesel cars require the fitting of a DPF in the exhaust. Many cars registered before 2009 have one fitted as well.
This should reduce soot from diesel engines by 80%, but it doesn’t come without problems: blockage of the filter.

How does a DPF work?
Diesel particulate filters (DPF) catches bits of soot in the exhaust.
Like any filter they must be maintained and emptied regularly.
Normally the car does this automatically by a process called ‘regeneration’ when soot is burnt off at high temperature, leaving a tiny ash residue. This process works on a fast road when the exhaust temperature is high.
Plenty of diesel cars are only used for town driving. They do not get up to those sorts of speeds, so ‘active’ regeneration was designed. This is when the ECU (engine management computer) takes control of the process.
If the DPF reaches a set limit, the exhaust temperature is increases which sets off regeneration. The journey is often too short for the regeneration to complete and the DPF is becomes partially blocked.
Extra fuel is injected into the cylinders and will drain into the sump. Oil quality deteriorates and the oil level will rise. At this point the vehicle will enter a ‘restricted performance’ mode to prevent further damage. A warning light will appear on your dashboard.
